Just what I wanted for a new iPhone. A special “Thank You” to artist ‘Serge Averbukh’ for the addition, at my request, to the design of my Navy rating, the lightening bolts (sparks as they are/were called) in the middle of the CPO insignia. I asked; he came through….When I use my phone, it brings back fond memories of my 20-year Navy career…. Thanks Serge….
An old portable brown kerosene lantern hangs on an authentic chuck wagon at a cook-off event waits for its owner to put it to use when night arrives. Lanterns have been around for centuries, and were a main source of light for pioneers; and for cowboys on the Chisholm Trail. They are still a great item to have for emergencies and who knows, maybe we all will need one, even in the coming years. (description updated Sept. 2022).

I wrote that in a book I published in 2009, "Riding the Chisholm Trail: Once in a Lifetime" after I had that experience that changed the way I looked at the world around me. Now 10 years later, that single day and the two years it took me to edit the images and write the stories in that book, I realize it continues to impact me. It's given me a new appreciation of our country's history and what it took for our pioneers, my ancestors, to forge what we now enjoy and many times undervalue. While it took me most of my life to appreciate these things, reflection...

Nice image! Great pov, takes you right to the lantern, yet shows enough of the whole scene. Lynda
Toni Hopper replied:
Thanks Andrea and Lynda. You wouldn't think living in southern Oklahoma you'd get many chances to photograph a variety of things, but lots of events have given me that. We probably have more photographers in this little community then most cities of the same size.

I love old lanterns. I almost bought one last weekend so I'd have it to set up for pictures when the mood was right. Great picture.
